MUST DO: Brunch at BaBay on Capitol Hill

Yesterday, I took my brother out to brunch to celebrate his birthday and he reminded me of one of the reasons I love him... he's always game to try new restaurants. We decided on BaBay's brunch, though I was slightly nervous since it was the first day they served brunch. (You always want to give restaurants a few weeks to iron out kinks before writing about them.) I was ready to cut them a break. After all, we showed up right at 11:30 and were the first people in the door.

Here's the deal. BaBay doesn't need the rookie break. It knocked my socks off. And, while there is always room for improvement, the Vietnamese twist on brunch was a refreshing way to break up the whole eggs-bacon-pancakes rut (not that I don't love those too!).

Our server was one of the co-owners so we decided to take her up on her recommendations. I started off with the Bloody Kenny, BaBay's take on the Bloody Mary. I like my bloodies so thick and mired in horseradish that you can drag a shrimp through them. This was a lighter take spiked with sriracha (note: must cook with more sriracha).

The menu had me at Fried Egg Banh Mi (though it also comes in classic, pork belly and meatball versions at brunch). I'd fallen in love with banh mi at Rebel Heroes and was suffering withdrawals since that food truck shut down.  This was a great breakfast-y spin and the fried egg held up nicely with all of the crunchy vegetables and crispy bread.

The Bro started out with the Chili Glazed Wings, and while I normally get grossed out by chicken on the bone, these were irresistable and I poached a few.

Finally, we shared the Grilled Pork Loin, again, not something in my normal wheelhouse, but it was amazing. The pork was pounded thin and well spiced and was set off by pillowy rice cakes that had a crunchy exterior and a soft farm egg - all with a side of sriracha aioli.

I had promised myself I would try Pound The Hill's (just a few doors down) much talked about Nutella latte (post forthcoming) or I would have been suckered in for dessert. BaBay's brunch desserts include a Banana Clafoutis with Curried Chocolate Mousse and Peanut Brittle, Vietnamese Coffee Milkshake with Churro, Black Sesame Cake with Coconut Caramel and Coconut Ice Cream and a Lemongrass Pot de Creme.

The brunch was good reason enough to return soon, but those desserts... they will be mine. See you soon, BaBay.

BaBay is at 633 Pennsylvania Avenue SE, Washington, DC, right between Capitol South and Eastern Market metros. (Does that stretch have a hip new name, 'cause it's got some cool new stuff?) Like BaBay on Facebook and Twitter to stay up with their latest creations - that's how I learned of the new brunch.

Cleveland Park Peek: Medium Rare Menu

So, I started a little neighborhood blog called Uptown Girl's Cleveland Park. Yes, I have a blog addiction, but I thought it would be a neat way to get to know my new neighborhood and what it has to offer.

Today's post is one I think you'll enjoy. I just peeked in the windows of Medium Rare (the new joint by Citronelle's Michel Richard, BGR's Mark Bucher and Ray's The Steak's Brian Zipin) and saw the menu. Get your sneak peek here.

Want to get a hyperlocal Cleveland Park perspective? Follow my blogger alter-ego Uptown Girl on Facebook or Twitter.

5/37/11 UPDATE: I tried Medium Rare's preview brunch today. Read all about it on Uptown Girl's Cleveland Park blog.

Austin Grill Takes to the Streets

I was wondering when this was going to happen. Established brick and mortar restaurants scaling their menus to compete with the renegade food truck brigade. Well, Austin Grill's hitting the streets as of today with wings, burritos and hot sandwiches. What do you think of their new rig?

Follow them on Facebook and Twitter. And discuss amongst yourself, does this strengthen the food truck position or is this the moment it jumps the shark?

Me, I think the places that put out great food at a great price are the ones that win out... that's who makes it, regardless of whether they are on wheels or brick and mortar. Of course, a kick-butt social marketing strategy doesn't hurt.

[NOTE: I wish they would add their Queso Fundido and some salads to the menu... in case anyone's listening...]

What I've Been Eating: Brunch at Estadio

I let my brother and his girlfriend borrow my car and was rewarded with a thank you brunch at Estadio (which I've been dying to try out!) I see why everyone has been raving... there are little touches everywhere that made the experience feel special. From the stacks of oranges at the bar, ready to be fresh squeezed (and mixed with cava, brandy and thyme!) to the locally sourced honey butter that comes with the warm toast.

I feel like the last person in DC to discover Estadio, so if you haven't yet been, take a look at these drool-worthy photos and... get. there. fast.

Estadio is located at 1520 14th Street NW, Washington, DC. You can follow them on Facebook, Yelp and Twitter to stay on top of the latest specials and news.

MAP: Where to Eat in LA

I only had 48 hours in Los Angeles this visit, but I got SO many recommendations from friends, locals and restaurant industry insiders... you know I had to Google map them! If you've got a trip to LA coming up, here's one hell of a starter list.

My favorites this trip were Urth Caffee for breakfast, THEBlvd for lunch and Culina for dinner. But I've still got one meal left (lunch) before my flight takes off... which one of these should get the nod? *paralyzed with making a foodie mistake*

View LA, CA in a larger map

Keep in mind, I didn't have a car this time and was working in Beverly Hills, so it's heavily centered there. What'd I miss this trip that I should check out next visit?

What I've Been Eating: Lunch at BLT Steak

I recently had a great girlie catch up lunch at BLT Steak (btw, we were the only women in there... it was stacked with suits!) and wanted to share the experience. I'd go to BLT just for the gruyere popovers that come gratis, but check out these other options...

I know, I know, they are known for their steak... but if you don't have a steak budget, have the cheeseburger, like my friend E did:

I was trying to eat lighter (damn WW guilt), so I opted for the Lobster Cobb Salad, which is colorful and delicious. The egg was so soft  (I think I need to learn how to boil eggs so they still retain that soft yolk), the lobster sweet and the greens and veggies added crunch.

BLT is also a great happy hour option - they have $5 specials at the bar.  And, splurge on the tuna tartare... it's the best I've had in DC (and the plating alone is worth the money.)

Follow them on Twitter for updates and the latest specials or make a reservation and get eating!

To Do: Krispy Kreme BGR THIS SUNDAY ONLY

Gotta be quick on Twitter to catch madness like this... Mark Bucher of BGR Burger Joint just tweeted that he's doing an experiment... an evilly delicious one... this Sunday at 11am at the Old Town BGR location, he'll be serving up Krispy Kreme "Luther" Burgers while they last.

It might look a little something like this photo... consider the bun being replaced by donuts. Inside, a burger plus bacon, American cheese and an egg. Zzzzzz.

The Old Town BGR location is at 106 N. Washington Street in Alexandria, VA and convenient to the Old Town Metro stop. Or you could walk. After this calorie bomb, you'll need a stroll.

To Do: Zola Wine & Kitchen Whoopie Pie Eating Contest

If I created a Whoopie Pies of DC Google map, Zola Wine & Kitchen would be a must stop. It's one of my favorite places to grab lunch near my office and these red velvet Whoopie Pies are diet slayers (and SO worth it!)

On February 11th from 5-8:00pm, Zola Wine & Kitchen is having a wine tasting and whoopie pie eating contest - it's free, so just drop by their location at 9th & E Streets NW in Washington, DC.  For a little pre Valentine's Day fun, you'll also be able to frost your own whoopie pies for your sweetie (or for your own belly... who has to know?)
Zola Wine & Kitchen Whoopie Pies (via Stir Food Group)
[SIDE NOTE: Zola Wine & Kitchen is going to be selling Valentine's gift baskets brimming with cupcakes, cookies and whoopie pies, so you can pre-order those as well ($30-$55).]

Adventures in Home Ownership: Appliance Repair

Yesterday as I was home with my recovering pup (got neutered, poor guy!), I noticed the light was out in my refrigerator. Me being me, I assumed the light blew out and went on with my day. A few hours later, I went to get some ice and realized the ice maker wasn't working. I flipped fuses. I tweeted for advice (resulting in "check fuses" advice.) Nada.

So, I'm new to this home ownership thing. Normally, this is where I'd calmly call the landlord and let them handle it. Instead, I turned to Angie's List. I love Angie's List in theory, but I hadn't used it yet. I still find it a little overwhelming. It's kind of like Yelp, but specifically for home repair recommendations. When I searched for "appliance repair - large" near me, I got 22 recommendations. Each had great ratings and lots of positive reviews. I started by looking at the one nearest to me - he had raves for being honest and fast. (Yay!)... but didn't service Bosch. Next up, I checked the Bosch website for service recommendations and found 3 matches with Angie's List.

Which brings me to Wuerstlin's Appliance Repair, based in Highland, MD. They had 27 positive reviews from previous customers and also, if my refrigerator was under warranty, could provide the service gratis.  They scheduled me for a morning consultation with their tech specialist, Brian. My window was 9:00am -12:00pm. He called at 9:15am and told me he'd be there in 30 minutes... and was. He was professional, nice (even to Ike) and immediately diagnosed my problem... as... a... wait for it... hidden power off switch that I had somehow accidentally pressed. Classic, Tammy.

The good news is, Brian didn't mock me or make me feel stupid (I'm not sure I wouldn't have been able to resist a smirk.) He emptied my melting ice trays and showed me where to find my serial number. He then called it in to the office to let me know if it was still under warranty for future knowledge (it wasn't, but hey, now I know.)

While I had to pay for the travel and consultation, $129.00 wasn't too shabby for getting the refrigerator up and running when I thought it might be a $500 motor repair. In addition, if anything else goes wrong over the next 3 months, the will come out and waive that fee.

Ah, ya learn something new every day...

Who's Got the Best Fried Chicken in DC?

When I asked this question on Twitter and Facebook yesterday, recommendations flew fast and furious. I'm no expert (thanks to my chicken issues) but my dude lives for it, so I was pondering where to take him for some pre-V Day dining.

Based on sheer numbers, Ooh's & Aah's of Washington, DC seems to be the winner, but I'm most interested in checking out Chef Gillian Clark's General Store in Silver Spring. Washington Post food editor Joe Yonan tipped me off to General Store - and I still regret that I never made it to Clark's Colorado Kitchen before it folded up shop. Plus, it's takeout so I can just pick up fried chicken, mac-n-cheese and bacon-y greens and be the couch potato that winter makes me.

Here's the full roster of recommendations in case anyone wants to do a Fried Chicken Tour of Washington, DC (and as always, let me know if I missed anyone amazing):

To Do: See the Baby Gorilla at the National Zoo

Looking for some free entertainment in a warm environment? Try the Ape House at the National Zoo.

I had friends with kids in town this weekend and after going to the zoo to (not) see the pandas, I was desperately asking every stray zoo visitor if they had seen ANY animals. I get it, it was cold, I didn't really want to be out in the snow, but we had kids to entertain and those raccoons red pandas didn't do it for us.

The gorillas though, provided a solid hour of entertainment... until they kicked us out at closing time. It was cute overload, but also had enough gross factor (think gorillas picking their noses and other such fun) for the kids that they were laughing their little booties off.

More pics and fun after the jump...

To Do: Spontaneous Snow Photo Safari & Class

I've been wanting to do a Washington Photo Safari ever since I graduated to my beloved Canon Rebel.  They just emailed me that they are doing an impromptu photo class on how to take photos in the snow.
The class is tomorrow (January 27) at 9:45am. David Luria of Washington Photo Safari will learn how to set the exposure and white balance to perfect your snowy Washington landscape pictures. He'll also show you the best angles on the historical buildings, parks and monuments.

Sure it'll be cold, but it will also be cooool... Just register (class is $54) and meet at the base of the Andrew Jackson statue on Lafayette Park (right behind The White House on Pennsylvania at 16th Street NW).

Couple more of my favorite amateur snowy Washington photos after the jump...

To Do: Bourbon Steak Winter Wonderland Patio Party

Bundle up and bring your friends, on February 13 Bourbon Steak is cranking up the heaters and firepits on their outdoor patio for some grillin' and chillin'.

Snow or shine, new Chef Adam Sobel will debut a hearty, comforting menu of cider, hot chocolate, short ribs, mac n cheese and more. Make your RSVP, do a snow dance and come on down for a great pre-or-anti-Valentines-Day-party.

A Day in the Life of a Food Truck: El Floridano

It started out like every other work day, with me running late. I was supposed to meet Stephan Boillon of the El Floridano food truck, promptly at 10:00am to help prep and load. As I realized my transportation plan was an epic fail, I tweeted "I hope he doesn't go all Marco Pierre White on me." When I arrived, he dryly said, "I won't go all Marco Pierre White on you... he would have fired you." Touche.

That was the start of a great day. I thought the most interesting part would be the cooking and chatting with customers, but I really enjoyed talking with Stephan and his partner Tia Crawley about the challenges and business side of the food truck trend.

For instance, did you know that the Metropolitan Police Department has hired trained nine officers to dog the food trucks and enforce the regulations.  Things like, if there's no line for five minutes, you have to move. Sigh. C'mon DC, you've got bigger criminal fish to fry...

El Floridano has a steady stream of Floridians as customers. Stephan hails from Lauderdale and on the day I was with them, folks from Tampa, Miami and even a Key West native lined up for Cuban sandwiches. We all lament the lack of real Cuban bread in the DC area and Stephan tells us the secret to Cuban bread is (gasp!) lard.

They may be known for their Cubans, but the fastest seller was the banh mi sandwich which comes in meatloaf or vegan tempeh while it lasts. Not too long after the window opened, I was sent out with a marker to let folks know it was sold out.

The soups are also made from scratch - mushroom bisque and sunchoke on the day I was there - and are vegetarian (and healthy - no cream!)

I asked about the rivalry between food trucks and brick and mortar restos. Stephan said there are many chefs that are supportive and noted Chef Jose Andres of Jaleo, Oyamel (etc, etc) and Todd Gray of Equinox. Others aren't so supportive and try to drive them out of their neighborhoods. On the competition, he notes, "I wish they would just compete with better food instead of trying to put us out of business."

Following the District Taco model, El Floridano has plans to expand to a brick and mortar location, but they won't give up the trucks. In fact, Tia, who Stephan has made a business partner, wants to expand the hours and buy additional trucks. "I love being out here, talking to people. If it was up to me, I'd reload the truck and be out all day."

One other neat note, El Floridano is solar powered, so they have to find a parking spot that is sunny to fire up the grill! The workers in L'Enfant sure were happy to see them and poured out of their buildings for the warm soups and sandwiches. I'm happy to report, we were having as much fun inside making them as people were eating them.

To find El Floridano when it comes near you, follow them on Twitter and Facebook. And remember to introduce yourself to Stephan by your Twitter handle so he can put a face with your tweets! (I told him I was embarrassed to do that, but he thought I was being ridiculous.)

UPDATE 7/30/2012: Stephan's working on opening his first brick and mortar restaurant space, Mothership! You can help by funding his Kickstarter for as little as $10: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2099558090/stephan-is-almost-set-to-launch-mothership-restaur

What I've Been Eating: Lunch at Ris

Work's been a little crazy lately, so I plotted an escape for my team at work today to cab over to Ris to explore some new resto-territory. (We can get in a Penn Quarter rut... and there are coworkers at every turn, so this was a nice change.)

While you couldn't get the full menu, there were three courses and quite a few offerings. The full Restaurant Week menu for Ris is posted here, but I'll share with you what I enjoyed:

Ris Soup of the Day: Portugeuse Kale (photo: Tammy Gordon)

I've been trying not to gain ten pounds during Restaurant Week, so starting off with this hearty kale soup warmed me up and wasn't so filling that I couldn't enjoy what came next... which was mussels cooked in a tomato sauce with chorizo sausage and grilled bread to soak up the yumminess.

Ris Mussels in Tomato, Chorizo Broth (photo: Tammy Gordon)

Still trying to keep it light, I finished with the sorbet and cookies option and was rewarded with one scoop of densely delicious mango and one tangy blood orange dollop. The cookies were peanut butter and oatmeal.

Sorbet & Cookies at Ris (photo: Tammy Gordon)
Ris is on the corner of 23rd & L Streets NW and is accessible from the Foggy Bottom or Farragut West metro stations. You can scoop up a lunch or dinner reservation on Open Table or stay in touch with them on Facebook, Twitter or their website.

To Do: DC Brunch Spots Open on MLK Day 2011

Want to grab brunch following your Martin Luther King Day of Service event?  I've started a list of restaurants that will be serving brunch on the national holiday for those of us that are lucky enough to have the day off.  If I missed anyone, leave it in the comments below this post or tweet me.

- Busboys & Poets will be serving brunch from 9am - 3pm at all locations (Shirlington, VA; 14th & V NW, DC and 5th & K NW, DC)
- Commonwealth in Columbia Heights - I'm partial to the BLT and fried olives here. *
- Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe will be serving brunch starting at 7:30am, in case you're an early bird!  Specials include Filet Oscar and the very fun named Barack Obamlette plus Assawoman Bay Crab Omelette.
- Logan Tavern - a reader reports seeing a sign on the door that they'll be serving brunch from 11am-4pm.
- Matchbox, I'm told by my Twitter sources, serves brunch on every federal holiday. If you need another reason to love them, try their breakfast pizza or cast iron baked cinnamon rolls. *
- Open City in Woodley Park and Diner in Adams Morgan serve breakfast all day, every day. Great for a brunch fix at any hour.

Still looking for a place to serve? Join me in serving at Miriam's Kitchen or find a way to give back near you doing something you care about. Create The Good has a great search engine (disclosure: I helped build it so have serious pride in the site!) where you can search by topic, time or zip code.
